        Professional Activities

        Dr. Long currently teaches in the School of Accountancy's undergraduate and graduate programs, with an emphasis on financial accounting, financial analysis and valuation, and international business. In 2017, Dr. Long was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Hungary, and he has served as the SoA's Director of International Programs since 2016. In this role, he has led short and long-term study abroad programs in Europe and South America. Over his career, Dr. Long has taught at Auburn University, Corvinus University of Budapest, and Virginia Tech, and he has delivered CPE courses for public accounting firms and professional organizations. He has received numerous teaching accolades, including Auburn University's prestigious Gerald and Emily Leischuck Endowed Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Alumni Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award, and the Harbert College's Lowder (twice) and McCartney teaching awards.

        With respect to scholarly activities, Dr. Long's research examines how task timing interacts with other factors to affect judgment, decision-making and task performance in accounting. He received a Center for Audit Quality Academic Research in Auditing grant, served as a member of a AAA Auditing Section  PCAOB Research Synthesis Team, and is a three-time winner of the School of Accountancy Outstanding Research Award. His work has been published in top academic and professional journals, including Accounting, Organizations & Society, Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Journal of Accounting Literature, Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Management Accounting Research, Journal of Accountancy, and The CPA Journal. Dr. Long has also published a number of educational accounting cases in Issues in Accounting Education and Journal of Accounting Education, two of which have been recognized with national case awards. 

        Prior to returning to Auburn, Dr. Long worked as a staff auditor and a senior staff auditor with Gifford, Hillegass & Ingwersen, LLP, and as an internal audit manager with National Vision, Inc., both in Atlanta, GA. He holds the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA ), Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV), and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designations. He is a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Institute of Management Accountants.
